Fuzz, or small lint that appears on the surface of clothing, is a common problem, especially on sweatshirts and sweatshirts made of cotton, polyester, or blends. These tiny balls can make clothes look worn, even if they’re relatively new. Fortunately, there are a few simple and effective methods to get rid of them and restore your sweatshirts and sweatshirts to their former glory.
1. Using a Fabric Shaver
A fabric shaver is one of the most popular tools for removing pilling – quick, safe for the material and easy to use.
Preparing your garment: Lay out your sweatshirt or sweatpants on a flat surface, preferably a table or ironing board, to conveniently and thoroughly remove any pilling.
Removing fluff: Move the shaver over the surface of the material in one direction. Do not press too hard, so as not to damage the fabric. The shaver collects fluff in a special container, which can be emptied after use.
Check the result: After going over the entire surface of the material, run your hand over it to make sure that no pills remain. The shaver works great on large surfaces and is ideal for tracksuits and sweatshirts made of smooth fabrics.
2. Using a Razor
A regular razor (preferably a disposable) also works well to remove the pills. It's a quick method, especially if you don't have a fabric shaver on hand.
Preparing your razor: Use a new, clean razor to avoid snags or damaging the fabric. The razor should be used with caution on soft, delicate materials.
Gently shave away pills: Hold the fabric taut and gently move the razor over the fabric surface using short strokes in one direction. Be careful not to press too hard as this can tear the fabric.
Lint removal: After shaving, rub the material with your hand or a clothes roller to remove any remaining lint. A razor works best on small areas where there is light pilling.
3. Using Pumice or Pumice Stone
Pumice can help remove pills, especially on rougher materials. This method works best on thicker fabrics and should be used with caution.
Pumice preparation: Choose a fine, smooth pumice stone to avoid the risk of damaging the material. Make sure it is clean and dry.
Light rubbing with a pumice stone: Hold the garment taut and gently rub the pumice stone over the areas where pilling has occurred. Do this slowly to control the effect and avoid abrasion of the fabric.
Removing fluff: Once you’ve removed the fluff, use a lint roller or rub the material with your hand to remove any fluff. This method works well on sweatshirts and sweatshirts made from thicker materials.
4. Using a Clothes Roller with Sticky Tape
A clothes roller covered with sticky tape is a quick solution to help remove small lint and fuzz.
Preparing the garment: Lay the blouse or trousers flat. You can stretch the material to better adhere to the roller.
Rolling: Roll the roller in one direction, pressing firmly against the material to pick up as much fluff as possible. This method works great on smaller pillings and as a follow-up after using a razor or shaver.
Replacing the ribbon: Replace the ribbon on the roller when it becomes less sticky.
