Shrunken clothes after washing are a common problem, especially when the clothes are made of delicate fabrics that do not react well to heat and intensive washing. Fortunately, there are simple ways to stretch shrunk clothes and restore their original size. Here are effective techniques for different types of fabrics.
1. Wool and knitwear
Wool and knits are very prone to shrinking in hot water or after heavy washing. To stretch a shrunk wool garment, try this method:
Soaking in water with hair conditioner or baby shampoo
- Preparation of the solution : Fill a bowl with lukewarm water and add a few tablespoons of hair conditioner or mild baby shampoo. The conditioner or shampoo will soften the fibers, making them easier to stretch.
- Soaking the garment : Submerge the shrunk garment in water and knead gently for about 15 to 20 minutes to ensure that the solution penetrates the fibres.
- Gentle stretching : Remove the garment and gently squeeze out excess water, but do not wring the material. Place the garment on a towel and gently stretch it with your hands to the desired size.
- Dry flat : Leave the garment flat on a towel, shaping and sizing it. Make sure it is evenly stretched.
2. Cotton
Cotton can shrink, especially if washed at high temperatures. Fortunately, cotton is relatively elastic and will easily return to its original size with the right treatment.
Soaking in vinegar water
- Preparation of the solution : Fill a bowl with lukewarm water and add half a cup of vinegar. Vinegar softens the fibers, making them easier to stretch.
- Soaking the clothes : Place the clothes in the solution and leave for about 30 minutes.
- Wet stretching : Take the garment out and gently stretch it with your hands, focusing on the areas that have shrunk the most.
- Drying : Lay the garment flat on a towel, shaping it to its original size. The vinegar will evaporate quickly and the smell will disappear as it dries.
3. Polyester and synthetic blends
Polyester and other synthetic fabrics are more resistant to shrinkage, but if they do shrink, it's worth trying this method.
Soaking and stretching with heat
- Lukewarm water soak : Fill a bowl with lukewarm water and soak the garment for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Stretch to dry : Take the garment out and lightly squeeze out excess water. Then lay it flat on a towel and gently stretch any areas that have shrunk.
- Steam Dry : Lay the garment flat and use a garment steamer or steam iron to gently heat the material. The heat of the steam will help relax the fibers, allowing them to stretch.
4. Jeans and other thick fabrics
Jeans can shrink after washing in hot water. A slightly stronger method is needed to restore them to their original size.
Wet stretching and putting on
- Soak in lukewarm water : Place the jeans in lukewarm water and soak for about 15 minutes.
- Stretching by putting on : Put on your wet jeans and do gentle squats, stretching them in the areas that have shrunk the most (especially the waist and legs).
- Dry on the body : You can leave the jeans on until they are almost dry to get the perfect fit. Alternatively, hang them flat, shaping the legs and waist to the desired size.
5. Delicate fabrics such as silk and viscose
Silk and viscose are prone to shrinking in water. To stretch them without risk of damage, you have to be very gentle.
Soaking in water with conditioner
- Preparing the solution : Pour lukewarm water into a bowl and add a little gentle fabric conditioner or hair conditioner.
- Soaking the garment : Gently immerse the garment in the solution and leave for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Flat Stretch : Take the garment out, gently squeeze out excess water (don't wring!) and lay it on a towel. Gently stretch the material with your hands to restore it to its original shape.
- Dry flat : Leave the garment to dry flat, without stretching, to avoid distortion.
General tips
- Avoid hot water : Most fabrics shrink when exposed to high temperatures, so always wash delicate fabrics in cool or lukewarm water.
- Dry flat : To avoid further shrinkage, dry shrunk clothes flat to control their shape and size.
- Don't wring fabrics : When squeezing excess water from clothes, gently squeeze them rather than wringing them to avoid damaging the fibers.
- Use gentle detergents : Delicate fabrics such as wool, silk or viscose need mild detergents and conditioners that soften the fibers, making them easier to stretch.
Using these techniques, you can restore shrunk clothes to their original size and shape, extending the life of your favorite wardrobe items.
